How should I get my mg midget ready for winter?

Unfortunately I won't be able to drive my Midget this winter. What should I do before I garage it?

  1. You may want to use most of the gas as this will evaporate before spring. You should also start it up once a week or so and let it run awhile to keep the battery good.
  2. scrap it
  3. make sure you check the water levels oil levels , it has a good battery , give it a good clean so that there isnt any grit or anything to get to the metal work , start twice a week and put a cover over the car even though its in a garage and it should be sweet for next year
  4. Join the MG Owners club Fill it up with petrol its safer to have a full tank than an empty one Put it in a dry garage Disconnect the battery but from time to time charge it up You can buy a solar powered trickle charger if you are richer than me! Now and again reconnect the battery and start the car up but first don't pull the choke out so it turns over without starting a few times to get the oil going If it is dry take it out for a spin - yo'll be suprised how often you can do this if you warp up warmly I've had mine for 25 years and it still passes every MOT without a problem
  5. Change the oil, fill up with good anti-freeze, fill the petrol tank ( it won't evaporate or degrade by spring, but an empty tank can rust ) Ideally put it on axle stands, failing that, pump up the tyres to about 40-45psi, so they don't develop flat spots. Make sure the battery is fully charged and ideally disconnect it, especially if you're not going to be using the car at all for 4 months. Don't put the handbrake on, it can sieze up, instead, chock the wheels with a few bricks. I wouldn't bother starting it up every week, unless you're actually going to drive it, which would be a good idea if you can manage it, maybe once a month. Before you start using it agaon, correct the tyre pressures, charge up the battery and as the other guy said, don't use the choke on it until the starter's been turning for a good few seconds, this will allow the oil to get round the engine before it fires up. Good luck, wish I had a fun car for the summer!
